On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2022 | Personal Injury Law

Nursing home abuse is a horrific crime that often goes unnoticed until it is too late. Government agencies and abuse activists estimate that one out of every ten nursing home residents suffers from abuse.

It is important to recognize nursing home abuse before it happens. Knowing these signs is the best way you can see them and stop it.

1. Malnutrition

Malnutrition is sometimes hard to recognize. You can see it when a resident has a constant dry mouth, cracked lips, weakness and dizziness.

2. Poor hygiene

A classic sign of neglect is poor hygiene. When you enter a nursing home, check for dirty conditions, corners or strange smells. While you are in your loved one’s room, ensure they are clean, as are their accommodations. Look at their clothing and bed linens.

3. Sudden changes in behavior

As with all forms of abuse, behavior is the best indicator that something is wrong. Although conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia can cause behavioral changes, these often happen over time. New fears and uncharacteristic behavior are signs of emotional, mental, physical or sexual abuse.

4. Changes in finances

Noticing money missing or selling property is a good indication of financial abuse. You might also notice things missing from their rooms.

5. Bruising or redness

You should promptly investigate bruises or unusual red marks as these are the first signs of physical abuse.

Even if these signs are missing, any indication or suspicion of abuse is cause for an investigation. It is far more prevalent than you may think.
