In the time after you choose a nursing home for your loved one, you may start to worry that there is abuse going on that you do not notice.

Being able to tell when nursing home abuse is happening is important to prevent further physical or mental harm.

Nervous reactions

According to the Mayo Clinic, if your loved one seems to shy away from talking to the staff at the nursing home or seems scared to ask for anything, it may be a sign of abuse. Staff members may scream or berate elderly residents, which can cause the residents to avoid asking for help as time goes on.

Strange marks

If you notice odd-looking burn marks or scratches on an older person’s arms or legs, it could be a sign of physical abuse. These marks could even come from neglect if the staff members at the home do not help out the patients when they need assistance with tasks.

This lack of help can leave them struggling to take care of themselves with weak arms or hands. Your loved one may not have an answer or may not directly answer you if you ask them where these marks came from.

Less communication

Staff members can also try to keep elderly residents away from their friends or family as a form of abuse. They may isolate them and manipulate them by withholding ways of communication or the ability to schedule visits with family members.

Understanding what these common signs look like can help your loved one to stay safe as you look for a quality nursing home.
